At Lutra Health we're reimagining eyecare
Our mission is to connect eyecare providers and equip them with the tools they need to deliver care more efficiently and effectively.
By fostering collaboration among patients, optometrists, and hospitals, we enable a seamless, integrated approach to eyecare.
The Lutra Story
Lutra Health was born from a shared vision: to revolutionise eyecare through innovation and collaboration. Founded by Sam Evans, Conor Ramsden and Charles Solanki, Lutra Health brings together clinical expertise and entrepreneurial drive to address the challenges of a fragmented healthcare system.
From First-hand Experience to Transformative Change
As Consultant Ophthalmologists, Sam and Conor witnessed the inefficiencies in eyecare delivery. Sam Evans, a high-volume cataract specialist, pioneered “see-and-treat” cataract surgery, eliminating unnecessary delays and fostering collaboration between ophthalmology and optometry. Sam led a groundbreaking cataract referral trial involving 1,500 patients. By streamlining data sharing between patients, optometrists and ophthalmologists, the trial reduced pre-op visits by 75%, improved patient satisfaction and proved that smarter systems lead to better outcomes.
A Vision Backed by Expertise
Inspired by these insights, Sam laid the groundwork for Lutra Health. Joined by Conor Ramsden, a retinal surgeon dedicated to improving vitreoretinal care, the two combined their deep understanding of clinical challenges to create a transformative platform for eyecare providers. Charles Solanki, with years of experience building startups, joined to run the business day-to-day.

How does Lutra benefit patients?
Lutra simplifies the eyecare journey by connecting patients with optometrists and ophthalmologists. Patients experience reduced waiting times, fewer unnecessary visits, and a more personalised care plan tailored to their specific needs.
How does the platform improve collaboration between optometrists and ophthalmologists?
Lutra securely shares data between optometrists and ophthalmologists. This includes patient history, test results and treatment plans. In doin so, it ensures all providers have the information they need to deliver coordinated care.
Is Lutra available for both private providers and the NHS?
Yes, Lutra is designed to work across all sectors, including private providers and the NHS. The platform is flexible and scalable, meeting the unique needs of each provider.
Do patients need to download an app to use Lutra?
No, patients do not need to download an app. They can access Lutra through a secure web interface to fill out questionnaires and manage their eyecare journey easily.
How does Lutra save time for providers?
By automating referrals, enabling instant data sharing and reducing administrative tasks, Lutra allows optometrists and ophthalmologists to focus more on patient care and less on paperwork.
What makes Lutra different from traditional eyecare systems?
Unlike traditional systems, Lutra focuses on seamless collaboration and real-time data sharing between community and secondary care. This reduces delays, improves communication and ensures that patients receive the right care at the right time.
Does Lutra support integration with other clinical systems?
Yes. The team understand that many practices and healthcare organisations have already invested in large digital systems and we understand that the data gathered in Lutra is at its most useful when combined with data from other digital health systems. We support API integration with EPRs, hospital management systems and other health SaaS platforms and will work with you to make sure that the integration process is smooth and delivers the result you need for your service.
Does Lutra support digital consent?
Lutra can deliver bespoke and generic patient information assets (such as videos, diagrams and text) to your patients, giving them time to understand proposed treatments and their options. These episodes are auditable and form a critical part of the pathway - for example, some of our users have configured Lutra such that a patient cannot be referred for surgery unless and until they have watched a video explaining the risks of surgery and have indicated that they understand them. Whilst this may not replace your existing consent process, it can give the surgical team confidence that the patient understands their procedure and the subsequent risks.
